Egyptian LNG seeks to engage closely with the local community of El Behera and Idku. Recent examples of this engagement include the following:
1. Public Consultation: the public consultation element of the environmental impact assessment set a new benchmark in Egypt for such processes. The views of the public, government officials and NGO's were solicited at public meetings held in Idku, Damanhur and Cairo. 2,500 people attended these meetings. The meetings resulted in a better understanding on all sides of the project’s impact on the community and environment, leading to greater public support and government buy-in. The effort was recognised with a ‘Commended” Award in the 2003 BG Group Chairman’s HSE Awards
2.Ongoing Public Consultation: Ongoing meetings are held with the local community and their leaders. These meetings are two-way dialog, recent examples include meetings with the fishermen and their representatives to determine how marine procedures could be designed to minimise impact upon fishermen.
3.Participation in Behera National Day: Egyptian LNG seeks to be involved in public events and uses the opportunity to update local communities on progress.
